Gales (Guitar - Eric Gales Band) and Thomas Pridgen

OHMphrey - "Posthaste" review

"Renowned jam band Umphrey's McGee always has had one foot in the progressive genre.  OHMphrey - a project featuring three members of Umphrey's (keyboardist Joel Cummins, guitarist Jake Cinninger and drummer Kris Myers) plus OHM guitarist Chris Poland and bassist Robertino Pagliari - allows them to experiment even further."

MoeTar announced for RoSfest 2013

MoeTar announced for RoSfest 2013

MoeTar is honored to be playing RoSfest 2013. May 5th in Gettysburg, PA. http://www.rosfest.com/

MoeTarWe're excited to announce that US band MoeTar have been signed for the 2013 edition of the Rites of Spring Festival.
MoeTar is named after vocalist Moorea Dickason and bassist Tarik Ragab, the former supplying an essential ingredient of the band's sound with her vocal skills and the latter the main songwriter. Matthew Charles Heulitt (guitars), Matt Lebofsky (keyboards) and Dave Flores (drums) supplement the duo with their instrumental skills and versatile musical backgrounds.

From the early days of the band to the launch of their official debut album "From These Small Seeds" through US label Magna Carta Records in 2012, MoeTar have sought to combine the challenging and adventurous aspects of progressive rock with the accessible and easily enjoyable qualities of modern day pop and rock, earning them comparisons towards artists as different as Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and XTC. Described by some, at least to some extent, as a US-based, modern day equivalent of Gentle Giant in terms of their approach to the art of creating music.
At ROSfest we're just as much fans of new artists working towards establishing a larger fan base as the well established and familiar ones. And we're convinced that MoeTar is a band that will gain many new fans following their performance at Gettysburg in May 2013, a fresh and innovative new band that will positively surprise a large percentage of the audience in general and the home crowd in particular.

September 16, 2012
19 Broadway
Broadway Boulevard
Fairfax, CA
9 PM

Late breaking news! Some of you might know that our good friends the Travis Larson Band have been touring with our Magna Carta label mate and ridiculously good guitarist Dave Martone - who you might have seen, say, opening for Joe Satriani, or heard on Joe's record, or in Guitar Player Magazine, or...oh hell, his web site speaks for itself, here's links for both of them:

http://travislarsonband.com/
http://davemartone.com/

Anyway, we really wanted to see if we could play a show with them while they were in the neighborhood, and we just worked something out - on Sunday 9/16, we'll be putting on a FREE show at 19 Broadway in Fairfax. We haven't played the North Bay in a while either, so we're really excited. The show starts at 9 PM SHARP with a set from Dave, followed IMMEDIATELY by us, and then Travis Larson, and we'll close with a bit of musical mayhem at the end of the night!

We do know it's a Sunday, but we hope you'll all be as excited as we are about the lineup and brave the late hour on a school night...hope to see everyone there!

Looking Back On: Bozzio Levin Stevens

Review by Dan Bobrowski
SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Honorary Collaborator for progarchives.com

Improv deluxe... Terry Bozzio is a musical heavyweight: Zappa, UK, Missing Persons, plus countless solo releases, sideman sessions and clinics. One of the best players at his position. Tony Levin, Bass/Stick man extraordinaire, his list of sessions is nearly a long as the number of bands in this archive. He's played with the prog hard hitters; King Crimson, Pink Floyd, ABWH, Peter Gabriel,California Guitar Trio and the list goes on. He's supported the bottom for artists from Sarah McLaughlin to Alice Cooper.

The surprise for me when I bought this 6 years ago, was Steve Stevens. He of Billy Idol fame... Ultra-teased hair, leather pants, make-up and pointy guitars... ugh! I was blown away.... Shaking my head and taking a step back to re-evaluate this stadium rocker. I have to admit that I had some serious doubts about this album prior to putting it into the CD player. I expected simple riffs, three chord rock and roll licks and more squeals/squonks/tweedly weedly leads than any one man could stomache. What I found was a very talented and eclectic guitarist. Duende still ranks in my top twenty all-time instrumental list.

These musicians layed down an incredibly satisfying 7 tunes, over an hours worth of melodies and skillful improvisations in only 4 DAYS. Most bands take that long just decided which tune to record first. Each piece has an ebb and flow, not a solid wall of sound throughout the entire disc. There is plenty of space for each musician to stretch and take his share of the limelight and they seem to flex and weave together without squeezing anyone out of the sonic picture.

There are ideas aplenty throughout, intricate grooves and stunning solos. Take a dive, come up smiling.

MoeTar review by Richard Warren Field

There are a few times in my life when I have heard new music and was stunned. “What exactly was that? I’ve never heard anything like that before. What the hell was that? I need to hear it again—and again—and again.” Some instances I can recall: 1) As a teenage kid hearing “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix, 2) As a slightly older teenage kid hearing Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s “Tarkus,” 3) Around the same time—“Dance of the Maya” by John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra, 4) As a college student hearing Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” for the first time, 5) Later in adulthood hearing Dimitri Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, particularly the leaping slightly off-kilter fanfares that start the piece, and 6) “Cult of Personality” by the late 80s/early 90s group, Living Colour. Now we can add to that “Dichotomy” by MoeTar. Thank you Magna Carta records for keeping me on your mailing list and letting me know about these people.

“Dichotomy” is one of a number of really captivating cuts in the MoeTar style. I’ll discuss each cut individually. Generally, we have the crystal clear female vocal stylings (except for occasional raspiness in the upper range) of Moorea Dickason over adventurous rhythms and harmonies (most writing credits are attributed to bassist Tarik Ragab) producing a sound that is hard to compare to anything I’ve heard before. Certainly influences from progressive rock both past and present are evident. But this really is an original sound. And during some sections, if you want to sing along, you are going to have a challenge keeping up with Moorea Dickason as she sings complex vocal lines in unison, and sometimes in harmony, with the guitar and keyboard. Do I think MoeTar will break through the way Jimi Hendrix did? In this current music climate, probably not. This music takes effort to absorb—effort well worth expending, by the way—and often in our culture now it is the simple, sometimes overly simple, pounding drum and bass lines under step-like melodies with easy leaps that catch our attention, then fade quickly as their shallowness causes our attention to drift to the next banality. But those of us who like our music fresh, and inventive, and adventurous, need to stick up for acts like MoeTar. And—encourage them to produce more music!

Points North New Video

"High Wire" By POINTS NORTH

Video Director: Bryan Atarama

Points North is a leading light of modern instrumental guitar music, single-handedly helping to revitalize the genre through their technical prowess, superior musicality and compositional skills.
Spearheaded by guitarist Eric Barnett (a finalist in Guitar Player magazine's Guitar Superstar competition), drummer Kevin Aiello and newest member, bassist Uriah Duffy (Whitesnake, Christina Aguilera), Points North stands on the shoulders of iconic artists The Police, Rush and Dixie Dregs, but, as the title of their debut album suggests, clearly cuts its own artistic path.

Questions and Answers with Moorea Dickason (Vocals) and Tarik Ragab (Bassist) for Progressive Rock group MoeTar.

7. Could you tell us about your main influences?

Tarik Ragab: That’s easy: the Beatles, Weather Report, Jaco, Sly and Family Stone, XTC, James Brown, Queen, Hermeto Pascoal, Frank Zappa, Duke Ellington, Strawinski Genesis, Yes… just to name a few of the main ones. I remember my kindergarten teacher played piano and sang and every morning she would play Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” and that chord that was played on “I’ve got a beautiful FEE-LING” Would always make my heart melt. Ever since I’ve been a sucker for tri-tones and dominant chords.

Moorea Dickason: In my impressionable youth I was really inspired by Ella Fitzgerald for her agility and playfulness, Janis Joplin for her biting, gritty, bad ass rockin style, Aretha Franklin for her strength and ability to sound at ease singing the S*#@ out of something, Mariah Carey for her crazy range and melismas for days, Stevie Wonder for more then I have time to write about, Bobby McFerrin and Nina Simone for doing something completely different with the voice then just singing. I’m sure there’s plenty more but these were some of the big ones for me.

OHMphrey - "Posthaste" new album (Umphrey's McGee & OHM)

OHMphrey, an instrumental, improvisational supergroup, which features three members of the veteran improg band Umphrey’s McGee (keyboardist Joel Cummins, guitarist Jake Cinninger and drummer Kris Myers), and OHM guitarist (former Megadeth guitarist), Chris Poland and bassist Robertino Pagliari (a.k.a. “Pag”).

OHMphrey - Posthaste

OHMphrey’s latest effort, the unforgettable, and soon-to-be-classic, Posthaste, finds these five extraordinary artists creating instrumental music with a unified voice – once again. The album’s seven original instrumental compositions, and two bonus live tracks (“Firestarter” and “20/20”) recorded at Winston’s in San Diego in 2009, never meander. Simply put, Posthaste contains some of the most thought-provoking, elastic and heavy jam band music this side of A Live One, Space Wrangler, and Under the Table and Dreaming

Tracks such as “The River Runs”, “Tom Bombadil"(named after a character in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Ringsfantasy trilogy), “The Sun also Rises”, and “The Devil’s in the Details” are as distinctive and enthralling as their titles might suggest. Each track has its own identity and the music never lets up. Even upon repeat listens, Posthastecontinues to inspire, surprise and even shock.

Dig the joyous and playful staccato rhythms, Cummins’ Wakeman-esque lead synth lines and Myers’ ability to play with time during a drum solo in “Ramona’s Car Wash.” Rifle through your memories as you listen to the intriguing arpeggios opening “The Shoemaker’s Back” (as if these riffs have been encoded with subliminal information). Free your mind (and your butt) to the totally chilled out trace/dance feel of “Reggaelic” (which fades with a glorious guitar solo).

“Composing these songs was something we all did together,” says Cummins. “One of the best analogies I can give is ‘Simon Says for Musicians’, where we’re trying to organize these musical ideas in the moment.”

“Everybody contributed to these songs,” says six-string fretless bassist Robertino Pagliari, or Pag. “Once an idea popped out, it was like, ‘Oh, I have a melody…’ Or, ‘Oh, I have a rhythm part that works with that …’ These ideas just molded together, as if we had been working together forever, you know?”

“We all have this kind of synchronicity,” says Poland. “It’s kind of an overused word, but we have it. Whatever we’re doing, it works.”

Points North review at SeaOfTranquility

Points North - "Road Less Traveled"
Road Less Travelled is one hell of an enjoyable instrumental CD from Points North. The band has been out on the road with acts such as Uli Jon Roth, Blues Traveller, Kings X, Eric Johnson, UFO, Michael Schenker, Al DiMeola, Steve Morse Band, George Lynch, Pat Travers, and many others in recent months, so chances are you might get a chance to see this hot band opening up for some of your favorites. If so, prepare to be amazed.

MoeTar interview at MuzikReviews.com

MoeTar is the best band that you have never heard of until now. Consisting of Moorea Dickason (vocals), Tarik Ragab (bass), Matthew Charlea Heulitt (guitar), Matt Lebofsky (keyboards), and Dave Flores (drums), the awkward and cacophonic band name will help to serve as a reminder. Thankfully for the world, From These Small Seeds is the band’s debut release, so there is no extensive discography to catch-up on. This is a good time to stumble upon MoeTar because you will want to and need to spend some time with this album.

Christen: Yeah, I saw that on your website. That’s very cool! So I see that a lot of 60’s bands are your inspiration for your music – Led Zeppelin, The Beatles-…who else?

Tarik: The 70’s and late 60’s are a big part of my musical vocabulary. Frank Zappa…a lot of jazz influence, John Coltrane, Weather Report, a lot of fusion, a lot of that stuff. I listened to a lot of punk rock growing up and heavy metal, so it was kind of like a fusing of all the different influences over the years.

Moorea: And I grew up listening to a lot of rock, but also a lot of soul and R&B and pop music, 90’s, and so, I add that, I think.

MoeTar "From These Small Seeds" review

a dose of heavily Gentle Giant-inspired progressive rock, specifically from that particularly strong middle period where the band started flirting with pop elements in the progressive genre (In A Glass House, The Power And The Glory, Free Hand, Interview).

MoeTar's debut masterpiece

MoeTar is a band that will surprise you in many ways, their unpredictable sound of artprog and classic rock. Their melodies that should make Sparks proud or their complex songstructures that you haven´t since the days of Zappa, you can also add traces of Gentle Giant and Kevin Gilbert into this musical mess and you´ll get the Bay Area band MoeTar. They are Moorea Dickason - Lead Vocals, Tarik Ragab - Bass, Matthew Charlea Heulitt - Guitar, Matt Lefobsky - Keyboards and Dave Flores - Drums. Their debut "From these small seeds" is as adventurous as an album can get and it´s also total extasy for a music freak like myself, I can´t think of any other word than Masterpiece. Thank you and goodnight!
